Snow is Falling and Smiles are Beaming

Winter Portraits

I love winter. The cold crisp air is refreshing and rejuvenating. It always seems to wake me up and make me feel alive. Newly fallen snow makes the entire world around me seem fresh and new. The quiet of the winter woods Is calming, if not slightly eerie. The crunch of the snow under my winter boots is as satisfying a sound as listen to my son giggle (ok the giggle is a little better!). But one thing that does start to bother me during winter is the cabin fever. I love shooting photographs and it is always more exciting to go somewhere new to take pictures. But the cold weather, the ice, the snow make that a little more difficult. So what do you do? Go outside and take pictures anyway.

But of who? Who is crazy enough to let me photograph them in a snow storm. Well, I have confession to make…I’ve been planning this all winter. But the below freezing temps have made this difficult. But the stars aligned last week and allowed me to drag my 6 month old son out into the winter flurries on his sled and snap some photos. Now photographing a 6 month old under normal circumstances is a challenge but with some help from his best friend, and some sopping wet jeans on my part…by the end of a couple sessions outside we had some keepers.

Take a look at some of my favorites. And don’t forget to let me know when I can take your own winter portraits. But don’t wait too long, spring will be here before you know it.
